Each month we choose our favourite pic to showcase as our 'Medals of The Month'.
This month we were blown away when we saw what 9 year old, Oscar Simpson, has been getting up to in the world of Junior Golf!
We can tell from his Instagram (instagram.com/oscar_golfer) that Oscar is having an absolute blast with his golfing journey and he's reaping the rewards for his hard work and dedication to the sport he loves.
Oscar's Mum, Michelle, was kind enough to tell us a bit about Oscar's story so far and here's what she had to say...
"Oscars golfing journey started before he could walk, emulating his Dad by swinging the plastic kitchen utensils in the house!
Before the age of 2 he had access to modified equipment to help establish a solid foundation for an understanding of the game. He’s lucky that his Dad is a PGA Pro who has coached him every step of the way, starting with First Swing Golf lessons (firstswing.com.au).
By the age of 5 Oscar was playing representative golf in the South East Queensland District Pee Wee Pennants team for a local club. He’s a pint-sized player who has always loved the game and hanging out with the older kids.
He trains most afternoons after school and plays every weekend giving up time and special events with his friends and family to hone his skills, play rounds with golf friends and compete at every opportunity he gets.
Nothing comes easy for Oscar he works hard for every result he has achieved. He is his own toughest critic both on and off the course, he strives for excellence.
Playing events like Junior Golf Queensland 9 Hole Challenge and the local US Kids Brisbane tour. Oscar’s medal and trophy collection continues to grow so much so that this year we had to buy a second Trophy Shelf with Medal Display.
Oscar has a list of accolades to his name including:
In 2021 Oscar has dropped his Junior Golf Queensland 9-hole handicap to single figures after only starting last year on 34 handicap. Oscar’s 9-hole handicap at Meadowbrook when he first joined in July 2021 has reduced from 14 to 9 in just over 4 months.
In 2020, excitement was high when Oscar was selected as one of only 8 junior golfers in the world to compete in the first ever Holey Moley Junior tv show, it aired in March of 2021, and we were so proud of him finishing 4th overall. It’s another experience that many adults could only wish for but like everything Oscar simply takes it in his stride and enjoys every moment.
Oscar is very lucky to have his Dad, Jay who is a Callaway brand Ambassador opening the door for Oscar to be one of the first Callaway Junior Ambassadors in Australia, meaning he is always very well stocked with the most up to date and current clubs, balls and accessories. They have been so supportive and encouraging of Oscar's career and we couldn't have gotten him to where he is now without the help of Michael and the Callaway South Pacific team. He also looks very sharp in his ChinnyDipper clothing, again lucky enough to be an ambassador bringing the clothing brand to Australia.
Over the last 7 years Oscar has exceeded expectations that we as parents could have dreamt for our child. Oscar’s work ethic is amazing for a 9-year-old, always wanting to hit the best shot and won’t stop until he has, on many occasions Oscar has joined the 18-hole players on Friday afternoons and fitted right in. He continues to represent his local clubs and districts proudly with such a drive and passion for the game.
Oscar is a very pleasant and personal player that gets along with everyone, taking pride in every shot he hits, every putt he holes and every new friend he makes.
The kid lives for his GOLF."
